Description

"Salina" is a relaxed, "Medium Easy" catchy and swinging minor blues in G minor that has a conservative range in the trumpets. It briefly goes up to a written A, but most of it is in a middle register. While the solo is written in the 2nd trumpet, you could certainly move the solo to other parts or even open it up.

If you don't have a full band, you're in luck here. Although this is written for a standard 5-4-4 big band, this can also be played by horn sections as small as 2 altos, 1 tenor, 2 trumpets and 1 trombone. There are no woodwind doubles. I've also written out bass lines, chords and solos for students that aren't yet accustomed to changes and improvisation.

We recorded a version without solos so that your soloists can have an MP3 for practice, and we also included an MP3 of my band playing "Salina," that you may share with your students, so they can each get the sound in their ear. For directors looking for a few rehearsal tips, I've included a streamed video of myself going through the piece.
